Myka O. Bering

Continued from Page 1 of Myka Bering

Defining Characteristics

Hair: The Great Debate
For better or for worse, a huge debate has arisen around Myka's hair: curly vs. straight. In seasons 1-2, Myka's hair is curly. In season 3, she's suddenly sporting straight locks and continues to be "straight" until 4.02, where she returns to the curly style (though, season 4's curly is more of a "crazy lady who stole a baby from the hospital" curly, than the original curly look her hair possessed).

The change in hairstyles has been seen by some as a physical manifestation of Myka's sexuality/relationship with H.G. Even Jaime Murray herself commented on Myka's hair, seeing it as an attempt to be more like H.G.:

Joanne Kelly confirmed as much, stating Myka went back to curly hair in season 4 in an effort to avoid Lesbian Twinsies Syndrome.

Even the show acknowledged the raging debate in a very meta way. In episode 4.09, Myka's sister Tracy grabs her by the hair and yells, "You and your hair. 'I like it curly. I like it straight.' Make a decision!" Later, a non-possessed Tracy Bering tells Myka, "Your hair looks really cute like that." Myka immediately reacts, "Do you think so, cause I really like it curly, but maybe I should go back to the...you know what Tracy?" and in a good directive to everyone, Myka concludes, "It doesn't matter." Agreed.

Eyewear
One thing that is not up for debate: Myka/Joanne Kelly looks damn fine in a pair of specs. Like absurdly fine. Fortunately, we have had the opportunity to see her in a wide variety of eyewear over the seasons. Season 3, in particular, was straight up glasses porn as far as Myka/Joanne Kelly was concerned. Below is a list of all the appearances of one of my favorite Warehouse 13 ships: Myka Bering and Glasses. A gallery of this ship is located here. Warning: it's amazing.

Ass Kicking
One of the best things about Myka Bering is that she's the most physically dominant badass on the show, more than Pete, H.G., whomever. Even Eddie McClintock pointed out that his character Pete is always getting beat up, to which showrunner Jack Kenny stated that he liked that Pete and Myka played opposite the stereotypes for their genders.1 Myka's an awesome shot; she takes beotches down with her signature move, the clothesline; and the show fortunately never points out that "Oh my God, there's a woman who can be strong and kick ass. " Nah, man. That's just Myka.

Catalog of Badass:

  • Disarms a guy holding a knife to her throat by elbowing him, punching him, kneeing him in the netherregions, and doing a leg sweep. All of this was done barefoot, in a tight dress, while wearing pearls. (1.01, 8:48)
  • Chases down two bank robbers, one of whom she tackles from behind. A third comes to team up against Myka and she beats the crap out of him. (1.02, 33:03)
  • Speaks French to try and get past a museum guard, but when he doesn't cooperate, she Teslas him into unconsciousness. Two more guards see her and she pretends to give herself up, so when they get near her - 1st guard gets an elbow to the groin and then flipped on his back; 2nd guard gets his face beat in with his own baton, finished with a knockout punch. (1.03, 1:44)
  • A dude affected by an artifact starts to feel Myka up. Without really looking or reacting, she grabs his hand and twists it in a bone-crunching move (1.03, 23:08)
  • Affected by an artifact urging her to act on her desires, she tells Pete he's an ass, punches him twice in the face (to which he responds "ow" a lot), and then when a police officer tries to stop her, she knocks him out (1.03, 30:13)
  • Pete calls her bossy, and as she is still affected by the "do as you wish" artifact, Myka punches him right in the face again, leaving Pete to whine about the pain. She warns him to "stop pissing [her] off." (1.03, 36:54)
  • Possessed Myka/Alice elbows Pete in the face, punches him in the no-nos, repeatedly knees him, and tosses him around a hotel room like a ragdoll. (1.08, 37:34)
  • Karate kicks a security lock, destroying it and allowing Claudia and her access to the Dark Vault (1.09, 30:32)
  • When Pete gets his ass kicked by H.G., Myka draws a gun on her, growling, "I, on the other hand, have no problem shooting [a Victorian lady]." (2.01, 21:46)
  • Wears a DARPA GAK suit, which looks super latex-y and is like Kevlar, but thinner. Myka wears the suit to absorb all kinetic energy from a guy misusing an artifact. She also uses Transformer-like gauntlets made by Claudia to redirect all the crazy energy. (2.02, 32:45)
  • When Pete gets knocked down, Myka comes in and swordfights a baddie, as she took fencing lessons growing up (instead of playing with Barbies).(2.04, 1:19)
  • When a dude (the guy who played Scut Farkus in A Christmas Story) is holding Myka, Pete, and Hugo at gun point, Myka kicks him in the face, knocking him out. (2.05, 27:05)
  • Grabs H.G. by the neck and slams her into the wall, choking her (2.07, 13:18)
  • Clotheslines bad guy trying to escape while she and H.G. were arguing in the bottling plant (2.07, 36:35)
  • Grabs bad lady by the shoulder and slams her into wood shelves across the room. When the woman gets up and attacks Myka, they wrestle around on the ground, ending with the woman having a knife in the stomach. (2.10, 32:07)
  • Launches a lit torch across the room, nailing a stone Medusa in the eyes, conquering the "Soul" challenge for the team. (2.11, 33:14)

  • After H.G.'s betrayal, Myka threatens, "First time, shame on her. Second time, I'm bringing that bitch down." (2.12, 12:25)
  • Forces a gun in H.G.'s hand and tells her to shoot her if H.G. intends on following through on her plans, which eventually leads to H.G. giving up (2.12, 34:00)
  • Shoots out a one-inch garbage disposal switch from 20 feet away, disabling it (3.02, 36:37)
  • Throws a wedding gift at an artifact-ed bridesmaid, knocking her out; faces three marines with swords - where she takes one of their swords and proceeds to fight the other two sword-wielding guys, kicking their ass with punches and kicks (3.04, 35:50)
  • Appears in a video game in a red hood, shooting an arrow right into the chest of a bad doctor torturing Claudia. She then shoots a bad guy holding Fargo and Pete hostage. She reveals an extremely sexy outfit, which Pete labels as "dominatrix." She responds by saying, "Don't make me get my whip." Holy poop. (3.06, 35:03)
  • Engages in a one-on-one battle with a former co-worker who betrayed her, elbowing him in the face. When Pete is about to be shot, she kicks the bad guy into the path of the bullet, saving Pete. (3.07, 36:39)
  • Teslas Sally Stukowski from afar as Sally was escaping from beating Pete and Steve up. (3.08, 3:01)
  • When an elevator carrying her, Artie, and the Regents is about to plummet, she whips out H.G.'s grappler and uses it to allow them to escape the elevator, with Myka diving off at the last second. (3.08, 11:50)

  • Takes on at least six Brotherhood guards with Pete to allow Artie and Claudia access to a private area (4.01, 18:31)
  • Smashes store window with a chair and runs off, so Pete and Artie can get into a secret passageway. While running away, she knocks two policemen out and is finally restrained by a team of policemen in riot gear. She resists the entire time and smiles when Pete and Artie run off. (4.01, 26:51)

  • When attacked by her artifact-ed sister, Tracy, Myka gets out of her hold and shoves her against the wall. She blocks a knife with a giraffe lamp (no, really) and then tells her: "Look, you could never take me in a fight. Not when you were nine. Not now." (4.09, 21:00)

  • When a misogynistic baddie has Myka and Pete tied up, she sensuously asks the guy, "You wanna know a secret?" When bad guy leans in to hear it, Myka says, "Your goons went easy on me cause I'm a dame. They should have tied my ropes tighter." She then punches the guy right in the face; stands up and smashes her chair into one of the previously mentioned goons; and takes the other goon out with a knock to his face (4.13, 12:00)
  • While being held hostage in a camping supplies store, Myka waits for the two bad guys to get distracted, and then she kicks the guy holding a gun, and turns arounds and clocks the other guy, allowing her to escape. (4.15: 47:00)
  • After getting hit by a metal pipe by baddie Charlotte, Myka immediately recovers, chases down Charlotte and linebacker smashes her into a wall. • When goons come to attack  Pete, Myka, and Charlotte, they turn around and start punching the crap out of the men, eventually knocking them all out. Myka does all of this while looking flawless in a stunning blue dress. (4.19, 27:00)
  • Later, when Sutton directs more goons to protect him from Myka and Pete, the duo persist, with Myka repeatedly punching a guy and then breaking a glass over his head. (4.19, 29:00)

1. Though Jack Kenny said this in a way that is not my favorite, to say the least - stating that he likes that Pete is the girl and Myka is the guy. Groan. Cast commentary for 2.01:Time Will Tell from the Season 2 DVD.
