What is the first thing we hear after Artie turns back time? Two loud sex grunts from Bering and Wells. Seriously.
Told ya.
Apparently, the astrolabia decided to drop us back right at the moment Artie freed H.G. and Myka from the Mary Celeste pulley
block and ropes. After such depressing content up until this point in the episode, it is glorious to be free of the oppressive stench of despair that was following us around.
Myka immediately focuses on the issue at hand, saying they need to go find Sykes, but Artie, who is the WORST person to ever try and act like he did not participate in time travel, already knows the real issue is the bomb, not Sykes. Artie processes out loud, announcing that they need to go find Sykes' Hoveround because there's a bomb in it. H.G. and Myka, who go along with Artie's weird behavior for about .07 seconds, immediately call |
him out. H.G. specifically asks, "How did you know about that?" Artie deflects and just runs off towards the aisle holding Ghandi's dhoti - the proposed artifact that may disarm the bomb.
When they reach the dhoti, H.G. again asks, "How did you even know about the bomb being in the wheelchair?"
Artie: "It was logical and uh...I think he might have mentioned it in passing." Good one, Artie. Sykes mentioned he had a world-destroying bomb in his Hoveround in passing? Bro, my five-year old nephew could have come up with something better than that.

H.G. continues her inquisition: "And how did you know about Ghandi's dhoti?"
He replies gruffly, "It doesn't matter!" Way to go, Artie. No one has any clue now. Artie throws the dhoti onto the bomb, but it still keeps ticking. Myka realizes the bomb is fueled by hatred, which is coming from Sykes, not the artifact itself, so they rush off towards the portal because, as Artie tells them, Pete's about to push Sykes into it. Smooth Artie, real |
smooth. H.G. predictably asks, "How do you know these things?" but Artie is already on his way to stop Pete.
They reach Pete in time for him to pull Sykes back through the portal, so Myka can throw the dhoti on him. When she does, the bomb deactivates and Sykes says a "too little, too late" apology before he bids "arrivederci."

In the next scene, Artie is speaking with Regent Kosan and Mrs. F, arguing in H.G.'s favor. "I mean, people change. They learn, they grow. She had any number of opportunities to bury us. She didn't! I think under an extreme circumstance, I can see Miss Wells being quite heroic. I mean, if it came to it."
When Regent Kosan and Mrs. F note their skepticism at Artie's statements, considering he has always been one of H.G.'s biggest critics, he responds. "My point is that, in my gut, I know that if she had to, H.G. Wells would give her life for the Warehouse. I know it!" Awww, Artie. Regent Kosan states that it's up for the Regents to decide, but considering Artie's strong recommendation, he doesn't foresee an issue with H.G. being granted her freedom.
4.01 ends and it appears H.G. is on her way to rejoining the Warehouse team. If you then expect to see H.G. return to Myka in the near future, you are sadly mistaken. We do not see Bering and Wells again for 315 days/14 episodes from the airing of 4.01: A New Hope. The big question remaining after 4.01 is "how will Myka react when she finds out H.G. sacrificed her life for her?" The answer to that question...*sigh...shall be addressed later (look to 4.10: We All Fall Down).
