Romantic History/Interactions
Alex Vause is gay, super gay, and as we've seen with Piper, when Alex Vause wants someone, she goes after her and is not shy about it. So far, we've only seen two romances that Alex has been involved in; one friends with benefits situation; and a kiss that no one wanted to see. All are discussed below:
Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett (played by Taryn Manning) - Okay, so, not really a true romantic interaction, but hey, it still was a kiss, though no one, and I mean, NO ONE, enjoyed it. After Pennsatucky gets Healy to throw Piper in the SHU in 1.09: Fucksgiving, Alex plots her plan for revenge. Somehow, kissing Pennsatucky and proclaiming that they had sex was a part of this. How? I still don't know. But, hey...that picture to the left makes it worth it, right? |
Nicky Nichols (played by Natasha Lyonne) - the "hot, lesbian junkie" who is probably Alex's best friend in LCF. Between the two of them, you could have an epic smartass competition. Throughout the first season of OITNB, there are hints of Nichols' interest in Alex, but not until Vauseman explodes in catastrophe in the season finale does Nichols make a move. After Piper chooses Larry, leaving a sad-face Alex, Nichols lets Alex know what she really wants for Christmas - sexytimes. Afterwards, when Piper runs back to Alex for comfort, she is summarily rejected by Alex, with Nichols sitting right next to her. It is unlikely that Nichols and Alex will ever be anything more than friends with benefits, but in the crazy world of OITNB, never assume anything. |
Sylvia (played by Ashleigh Sumner) - Alex's ex-girlfriend who was dating Alex at the time she met Piper. The first glimpse we see of Sylvia is her charging at Piper from a darkened hallway and proceeding to jump atop her and dragging her to the floor in 2.10: Little Mustachoied Shit. Alex eventually pulls her off Piper, and we discover she lives with Alex and their relationship is still "on." So, Piper leaves angry and Sylvia sends Piper a flaming bag of poo as a warning to her to back off. Eventually, though, Piper tracks Alex down at a bar, where Alex and Sylvia were enjoying their evening. When Piper gets Alex alone, she offers Alex the chance to be with her in case Sylvia was not the love of Alex's life. Alex made the choice almost immediately and that was the end of Alex/Sylvia. The consolation prize for Sylvia: got to be the first person to punch Piper ever. That's something!

Piper Chapman (played by Taylor Schilling) - The Vauseman relationship is described in much further detail in its own standalone page: Vauseman. Meeting in a bar with Piper fresh out of an all-girls college, Alex came, saw, and she conquered. The two of them were together for years until Alex's participation in the drug ring became too much for Piper. Following a very bad breakup, a decade of non-interaction passed before they wound up in LCF together for their participation in Alex's "imports" business. Though initially frosty towards one another, the two eventually reunited in prison, leading to a complete and utter combustion of drama between Alex, Piper, and Piper's fiancé, Larry. By the end of season 1, Alex and Piper are broken up again, yet by 2.01: Thirsty Bird, the duo already softened towards one another...well...until Alex threw Piper under the bus to gain freedom. This leads to a nine-episode distance between the two. By the end of OITNB's sophomore season, it looks like Alex is on her way back into Piper's life, as a result of Piper's own doing. As Prepon is confirmed for every episode of season 3, clearly, their story is far from over.
