Alex Vause is a badass supreme, straight up. Raised by a tough, single mother, she didn't have enough money to buy cool clothes or even go to college, so, she knows all too well the feelings of inadequacy and being on the outside. Once she reached adulthood, she sought out her birth father, but experienced a horrific reunion, leaving her in tears and, incidentally, to an introduction into an international drug ring. She's smart; she can read people like they are pages in a book; and she chooses excitement and the possibility of danger over the possibility of being boring. That being said, to a degree, Alex Vause is still somewhat of a question mark, as she keeps things close to the chest and we have not seen too much from her point of view, yet. She has moments of real vulnerability and it is clear that a certain level of insecurity still lies at the edges of everything she does. Many have drawn comparisons between Alex and the character of Jay Gatsby, and in many ways, the similarities are striking: meager beginnings, criminal involvement to achieve financial success, and the passionate pursuit of a (sometimes) selfish woman who chooses safety over love. Whether Alex follows the ultimately tragic path of the Great Gatsby is unknown, but I am betting we will never fully uncover all of the facets that comprise the inimitable Alex Vause.

Alex Vause's Tattoos
An interesting theory as to the meaning of this tattoo is detailed on this Tumblr post.

Alex Vause's Family
Diane Vause (played by Kim Director) - single mother of Alex and taker of absolutely zero shiz. Diane had Alex after presumably one fun night with Lee Burley, drummer for Death Maiden, and she has no apologies as to Alex's parentage. She worked four jobs just to keep bobos on Alex's feet and glasses on Alex's face. She says what she thinks and has no problem throwing four-letter words around. Unfortunately, she dies unexpectedly of an aneurysm right at the end of Piper and Alex's relationship, when Alex was relatively young. She is a very important person to Alex and they clearly were close, as Alex says her natural reaction when she found out about her mother's death was to call her and talk about it. We only see her once in 1.09: Fucksgiving, but she clearly loved Alex and was trying her best to provide a good life for her. RIP Diane Vause.

Lee Burley (played by Lawton Paseka) - father of Alex Vause and rock god, according to Alex's mom. Lee is the drummer for the band, Death Maiden, and is a walking nightmare of a father. He was absent from Alex's life throughout her entire childhood, until Alex hunted him down at one of his band's shows when she was an adult (during 1.09: Fucksgiving). At that point, he commented on her "rack" and admitted he might have had sex with her if she had not identified herself as his daughter. HORROR. He is also the reason that Alex got into importing drugs, as she met Fahri, a member of the drug ring, backstage with her dad's posse. So, all in all, not a winner - of a person or a parent. Sadsies. |
